Rare Beauty Foundation: We tested out Rare Beauty’s Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation after receiving a free sample from the brand. Read on for our full review of the product.
As a makeup artist, I’m not particularly moved by celebrity beauty products. I wonder how much dedication and sincerity goes into creating the products. Are they just looking to make a profit? Do the products actually work? These are questions that need to be answered.
Selena Gomez’s Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation from Rare Beauty has been making waves since its debut. The number of positive reviews and product endorsements from other artists I know made me wonder if Gomez and her team were on to something. So I decided to see for myself what the Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation was all about. Read on for my honest thoughts.
About My Skin: Sensitive, combination, and acne-prone
With my sensitive skin and acne, I follow a simple complexion routine; I always make sure to use products that are non-comedogenic and gentle enough for sensitive skin.
When I wear minimal makeup, I use Tarte Shape Tape concealer on my dark spots and use Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder or MAC Natural Mineralize Loose Setting Powder to set.
When I wear full makeup, I like light to medium coverage foundations that can give me a natural glow, so I typically opt for Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Liquid Foundation or NARS Sheer Glow Foundation.
Since Rare Beauty’s Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation has buildable coverage with a natural finish, using it in place of my favorite products was easy. For three weeks, I used Liquid Touch at home, at work, and when out to dinner with friends.
How to Apply: With your fingers, brush, or beauty sponge
Rare Beauty recommends shaking the bottle well and applying a dime-sized amount of foundation to your skin (the foundation is highly pigmented, so less is more).
The brand also suggests using your fingers or a dense, short-bristled foundation brush to blend the product into your skin. A beauty sponge works too, but it can absorb a lot of product since the formula is quite thin.
The Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation is best suited for those with balanced or combination skin, but Rare Beauty offers application tips for other skin types. For drier skin types, the brand suggests using a moisturizer and a luminosity-boosting foundation before applying foundation.
For anyone with oily skin, Rare Beauty recommends using a pore-blurring and oil-controlling foundation before applying foundation and then setting it with a powder.
The Results: Velvety, natural-looking skin
When I first applied the Liquid Touch foundation, I was worried I had chosen the wrong shade. I ordered shade 380W, which Rare Beauty describes as a medium bronze shade with golden undertones, but it looked darker on the back of my hand before blending.
Once I started applying it to my skin, it matched my skin tone perfectly. The brand was right in its description of the formula: It’s so intensely pigmented that you have to apply it to your skin before you can accurately assess how the shade looks and lasts.
The foundation feels thin, lightweight, and exactly how I expected a serum-type foundation to feel. Once application was complete, my skin had a beautiful velvety appearance and looked incredibly natural—not too dewy, matte, or artificial. Only a few of my dark spots were still visible, and I was impressed with how quickly I was able to even out my skin tone without it looking cakey.
The brand recommends adding an extra layer of product only in the areas where you need it, so I reapplied foundation to certain areas of my cheeks and dotted on the few dark spots that were still visible. It took me less than five minutes to set up a base for my blush and bronzer, easily cutting my foundation product application time down by five to ten minutes.
The Value: Surprisingly affordable
At $29 for 30ml of product, I find the Liquid Touch Weightless foundation very affordable considering its performance and the amount contained in the bottle. The amount of product is comparable to most foundations, but the price is lower than many of its competitors that offer the same performance. Plus, you need such a small amount of product that you might have this product for several months before needing to buy another one.
Similar Products: You have options
The Ordinary Serum Foundation: Smoothing out skin texture while remaining incredibly lightweight and natural-looking, The Ordinary Serum Foundation ($8) is hands-down one of the best affordable foundations with a skin-like finish. If you want a product similar to Liquid Touch without breaking the bank, set your sights on this foundation.

If you’ve ever doubted famous beauty brands like me, you’ll be happy to know that Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation is a product that’s definitely worth promoting. This makeup base quickly creates an even skin tone and mimics natural, healthy-looking skin; it’s a star product that comes at a great price.
